Remember that news story

about the 352 billion in narcotics money that was laundered into the global banking system, and so stablized world financial markets at the start of the meltdown/shakedown ? The story announced by the UN in Dec 2008 but that no North America media outlet and few throughout the world carried ? John LeCarre noticed: it's the overworld/underworld background of his new novel. Our Kind of Traitor.
Well done sir. You have single-handedly kindled the debate the announcement deserved in 2008.

No UN security seat = ?

Avaaz has a Canadian co-Founder

Not that the right wing media, conservative commenters or even Warren Kinsella is willing to admit it but Ricken Patel was born and raised in Edmonton Alberta and has every right to "interfere" in Canadian politics. The issue isn't Fox news North opening a station, it's whether the PMO will once again override another arms-distance bureaucrat (at the CRTC) and stuff the channel down everyone's throats because there aren't enough fascists in the country to pay for it otherwise (or enough to give Harper his majority so he can destroy liberal democracy.)

Conrad Black

The right wing media are falling over themselves paving the way for the Dark Lord's return, "the time never fit the crime." Bullshit. Jail the poor forever, but give the rich an easy ride. Never believe law and order proponents actually believe in law and order. You can also see how right wing the corporate media really is in all this too. There is no such thing as a liberal media bias in a corporatist nation.

Political Social Engineering

The Harpercon talking points list includes painting the Liberals as social engineers, by which they don't mean building society, but manipulating it, and this from a party led by a man who promised to make Canada unrecognizable by the time he's done with it: that's social engineering, building prisons, defining protesters as thugs, undermining every democratic institution we have, that's social engineering, transforming Canada into something small and ugly and nasty. More con engineering. More corporate socialism, no environmental assessment, selling off crown assets at fire sale prices, spending $50 million in Tony "Pork Barrell" Clements riding where blowing up the Canadian shield is new form of development.

Harper's sulphury

Stephen Harper has that old demonic fellow traveler stench about him, something to do with those Karla Hamoloka eyes of his. And that tight, closed malice that leaks cold rage and vapourous stink everywhere he goes. He's a technocratic Mephistophelian. That's why he governs by fear.

1935 redux

The first shots in the battle against liberal democracy were fired in Toronto yesterday and today, the PMO wagged a dog by the tail, performed some slight of hand spent billions, promised billions more in their plan to bankrupt the government and sell off its assets at fire sale prices: the police state to come is now etched in our minds and the prisons are being built. This is step up to the plate time.

Accountability Harper-style

Toronto riots Harpercon provocateur-orchestrated attack on Labour ?

Friday, June 25, 2010

The CBC and the Con

When the CBC was first created (before television) by the RB Bennett government, the Conservatives supported Mussolini and Hitler and believed - along with the Empire Club, that there was nothing in fascism that was incompatible with Empire. Clearly Bennett wanted a state radio to buttress the claims of corporatism (the ideology of fascism. However, Bennett was defeated in 1935 by the Liberals and Labour, and thus turned the country away from fascism and tory democracy (letting the servants vote because they support the interests of their masters.) The CBC spent the war covering the horrors of the conflict between liberal democracies and the enemies who the conservative party had aided and abetted before the war. Since then, the CBC has been a voice defending liberal democracy. The neo-corporatists want to undo the result of the 1935 election and the second world war and to destroy liberal democracy forever, which was their agenda in thew 1920's and 30's.
Reminds of Jacques Parizeau being interviewed on CBC yesterday, talking about how when he first got involved in politics as a young man French Canadians, they were the poorest people in the country, what he didn't say, and what the CBC didn't note, was that was because Quebec was a fascist province until the Quiet Revolution in 1960, when Liberals and Labour finally overthrew the Union Nationale and Daniel Johnston Sr. (Brian Mulroney's mentor.)
As far as I am concerned, liberal democracy is what makes the CBC a public broadcaster rather than a state broadcaster. What the Harpercons want, is a state broadcaster willing to support the failed polices of the Conservative Party of 1935.
Fuck em.

Harper's wet Dream

The folks back in Alberta must love watching all the images of Harper's hometown Toronto as a police state: "See I told you I could do it." it's what oligarchy is all about: government by money and the police.

Israeli 1948

While Israel has every right to exist, the anti-Semitic treatment of their Palestinian-Arab cousins - descendants of Shem son of Noah - hence Semites, has been going since 1948. Israel, with the collusion of the League of Nations, seized Palestinian lands, any other admission is intentional misdirection. Israel is wrong: even Biblically they're wrong, or rather, this is not spiritual Israel, this is fallen Israel of which the Bible has plenty to say, mostly in the mouths of Jewish Prophets: in any event, if they were a spiritual nation, 50 years after the founding of their state they would have had a Jubilee, and returned the land to those who held it 50 years before. They did not. There is no righteousness in the councils of Israel, and Canada would be wise to acknowledge that fact.

More Harpercon Spin Machinery On its way

More Social Authoritarian infrastructure being moved into place before the Harpercon coup against parliamentary democracy in Canada. Just correcting facts for now, building a data base, and then set it on spin.

It should be called the Liberal Democrat Conservation Party, committed to creating an environmentally sustainable society and adapting it to evolving conditions, based on the ethical search for the best ways and means of achieving greatest equal liberty, in order to build a post-corporatist political-economy, with the federal bank becoming a credit union national for taxpayers, in short, we create a coalition of Levelers and Diggers and establish a cooperative commonwealth. We do what the Americans are about to do in America when they rein in Wall Street.
The next revolution has just started, consumers of government and financial services are joining forces to overthrow the Cromwellian-Mercantile banking Protectorate who have been running our world since the 1640's.

Harper, Fall on your sword

CAPP and its allies forced you to come back when you went rogue, went off the democratic track altogether. My guess is the only principle that you still are - that you ever were - standing on, is your visceral hatred of liberalism and your commitment to eradicate it. For the good of Canadian Conservatism, resign. In honour of those from that political tradition (including some of my own MacDonald-era Kingston Scot Tories,) resign. In the name of those from the party you used to subvert the nation, resign; for the sake of those who helped create our democracy, and in the cause of parliament over every party ever in power, resign.
For the good of Canadian Conservatism and the nation sir, you need to surrender your party and leave the stage. Let local conservatives reconsider their cause, let me them quickly pick a new leader, even as the stories of the ship of your state begin leaking out, Stephen let your party fight an election without you, even as a chorus of truth telling and whistle blowing and ratting out begins to sound. Let the new leader stumble to the polls, and in the aftermath of your ruinous rule Mr. Prime Minister, let them consider a less dictatorial form of conservative philosophy than neo-corporatism to present for our consideration next election.

Let voters of good will create a coalition of our own, one whose goal would be to elect representatives who serve individual ridings and not the interests of their party.

We are crown-chartered commoners, none greater or lesser than another. Party Politics just met its match in an awakened, online electorate capable of mobilizing on the ground around an ancient tradition of common rules that politicians keep making and breaking. The Speaker speaks for Our House, for the deal that was negotiated over centuries, the agreement we keep re-working as our institutions become more egalitarian. That is how I will be voting next time.

The Speaker comes Through

I thought Milliken was going to cave and that Harper's dictatorship was just around the corner, but apparently the majority still has a voice in this country. A good day for Canadian democracy.

The Political Class

Thank you Mr. Ignatieff for stating what should be said, and now discussed. What is the political class, was is political class, as far as I am concerned, Ignatieff's Liberal Conservative family pedigree, intellectual accomplishment and willingness to listen to reason, show me who has political class and who has not, when it comes to him and Mr. Harper: the PM has no class, Harper is small minded and mean spirited: thus, Stephen is too small for Canada. And more fool Bruce Anderson, the columnist I linked too, for his poor grasp of Ignatieff's place in the Canadian ruling class, his actual place as a cautious liberal willing to think and then do big within a complex balance: in fact; a genuine liberal from the ruling class always finds a way to create greater equal liberty, while Harper serves only the oil money: Anderson's admitted inability to strategically comprehend why Ignatieff would talk about the political class, says more about the columnist than it does about Iggy. A political class should have class. Ignatieff has it, Guergis, Jaffer and Harper do not. The PM's record of discord proves he is a lesser man serving a lesser cause.

End of the Liberal Empire ?

My response to Andrew Coyne.
Liberals can't be the party of global corporatism and democracy: the two ideologies are mutually exclusive. Neo-liberalism is a conservative ideology, not a liberal one: there is no such thing as a good corporate citizen for the very simple reason that corporations are not citizens: nor can they sign affidavits in court because they have no conscience to bind them. And if corporatism is the only real game on the table, there is no need for a kinder gentler exploitative golem: what Iggy's grandfather George S. Grant would have called private government. No, liberalism either chooses democracy and small business/cooperative enterprise, or it chooses corporatism: selling us out to the world's privateer governments will not save the Liberal Party: either the party stands for the greatest equal liberty within the context of the greatest equal good, what Grant might have called a more contemporary version of Sir. John A's old fashioned Liberal-Conservative coalition that created Canada, cooperative commonwealth, or it betrays the underclasses of the world by unifying middle class levelers and the ruling class protectorate to create what King and Labour prevented RB Bennett from establishing in 1935, fascism: international imperial corporate capitalism, the most anti-democratic force on the planet.

Lament for a Nation

This book, by George P. Grant, maternal uncle of Michael Ignatieff, somehow seems extremely timely again. A must read.
Addendum Just read True Patriot Love by Iggy, about the Grant family, public intellectuals and Canada, interesting take on Lament, it's roots and his uncle.

Someone who was in Ottawa Coulter Day

From A CAPP discussion, with permission
Joy McPherson I agree that the email from the provost set up this whole scenario and Anne must have been rubbing her hands in glee when she received it. Cha Ching, Cha Ching $$. I don't believe Anne has any seriously held beliefs on anything. She acts more like a classic sociopath imho and they don't give a wit about anyone but themselves. She does what she does for her own personal benefit. Below is a comment from a poster on the Greenwald thread I referenced above. He is Canadian and was at the event in Ottawa. He made many good points on there AGAINST Canada's hate speech laws.

Coulter's Anti-Semitic Fundamentalist Hate Crusade

Ann Coulter is an anti-Semite because she preaches against Palestinian Arabs who are Semites. Anne Coulter is a Christian fundamentalist preaching a Crusade against Islam under the guise of the War on Terror, Anne Coulter has a spirit of condemnation and serves the same principality of darkness that all those in the conservative Bush League serve. The elect have again deceived themselves. What would Jesus have done, sat listening to Coulter spread hate in his name, or thrown her and the money lenders she was dining with out of the room ?

Security And Secret Society Rule

When any government - formed from among the elected representatives of the Canadian House of Parliament - whether any cabinet so formed represents a majority of votes cast in any election or a minority of votes cast - rules to conceal security data from any percentage of representatives elected (majority or minority) then it is not democracy, but a secret society that it is being established.

Naive Libertarianism

neutered by corporatist geo-politics, although I agree with the blogger that homemaking is a real job, unlike say, working at Walmart or Tim's - the dead end/low rent work that Ms. Bennett may or may not have been implying weren't real jobs, since there is a case to be made for the fact that she might have meant real jobs you can live on, unlike - the drone work for low wages that is the future of employment in the Duffyverse.

American Insaneocons lose health Care Battle

It is hard to imagine how anyone can think that rapacious, malicious amoral insurance companies can be the heroes of the American right, but, apparently the Christian fundamentalist whackjobs in the republican p[arty prefer oppressing the poor, removing the last vestiges of dignity from the sick, and turning every opportunity into a money grubbing whorefest in Babylon USA. So much for the Sermon on the Mount. And here in Canada, our religio-political right is just as fascistic. Fortunately the vast majority of Canadians aren't fundamentalists, thank God, and I mean that deeply and sincerely. America is becoming ungovernable however, and the zealots aren't done with their hate yet. My guess is Obama will be assassinated and America will implode on a scale unlike anything ever seen. For a brief shining moment, there is hope in America, after this, the deluge.

Fiscally conservative/socially liberal

That's what Toronto mayoralty candidate Rocco Rossi says he is, I say it's impossible, in modern terms a fiscal conservative is a corporatist, a corporate socialist, let Big business run everything, and once Big Business is involved, social liberalism is dead in the water.

welcome to wide stream media

Where the news isn't the corporate message tied in a bow by employees of the corporate medium, because here there is more context and more POV's and therefor more interesting, true stories. Like this one, which has a big back story, msm barely covers.

Library Internet Access being cut by Tories

It would appear that my earlier explanation about the value of wide stream media access to depth of news and contexts, is about to go back to narrow MSN corporate bandwith for many because the Tories have cut off funding to library internet access, too many masses with too much access to information - news streams that the Harpercons would rather they not have, in their efforts to focus everyone's attention back on the facts according to the Duffyverse.

Main Stream media is the medium of the corporatist message, and contrary
to their being broadcasters, they are actually casters of a narrow
message: www is WSM: wide stream media; it has more stories, more POV’s,
and therefor more interesting contexts and meanings, it is a more
democratic medium and message. Journalists who narrrowcast the
corporatist message are less interesting, however good a writer any given one of them may be, or however hard he or she are trying to be good journalists. The
pretense of objectivity is also not in their favour, no individual can
be objective, everything is subjective, and in the case of corporate
media, subject constrained: at best a journalist can be fair, at best a
blogger can be fair, some journalists speak truth to power, most don’t,
that most is why most of us aren’t interested in what they have to say.

Is Amir Attaran a Patsy of Big Tobacco as Big City Lib thinks ?

A second email from Amir to me,

"How strange. I have not seen what is written at that blog, but if the assertion is that I received tobacco industry funding while at Harvard, that is completely untrue. I am sadly accustomed to such shoot-the-messenger nonsense from the Tory blogs, which have been particularly uncivilized as of late, but to be told this is on a Liberal blog comes as a surprise. I would hope people calm down and learn to focus less on the messenger, than the message at hand, which concerns the government’s compliance with the law of armed conflict insofar as the Afghan detainees, and compliance with Canada’s constitution insofar as Parliamentary documents.

Sunday, March 7, 2010

An email reply from Amir Attaran

Hi Jerry,
There’s no secret. I held research and teaching positions at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Govt earlier this decade, where the thrust of my work was global health policy. Part of the time I was based in the Centre for International Development, where the director was Jeff Sachs. Later I was in the Carr Centre for Human Rights Policy, where the director was Michael Ignatieff. From Harvard, I went for briefer stints teaching at Yale, and researching at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (also called Chatham House) in London.

During the above period, I was being attacked by the anti-globalization left wing on specious accusations that my salary at Harvard was covertly financed by big pharma. Michael was of help in dispelling those false allegations. So it is both comical and ironic now to be attacked from the Tory right, with the nonsense that I am a “puppet” (your word) for Ignatieff.

The better explanation is that, having drawn bullets from both the left and the right at various times, I am independent-minded and believe in the facts as my research leads me to them. Currently, the facts are that officials in Canada’s government have knowingly partnered our country with torturers in Afghanistan. Others may grumble about it, but the evidence is overwhelming.

Con Prorogue Talking point from 2007: re Chretien

In 2007 the Conservative Party of Canada to justify the government's decision to prorogue circulated other past examples of prorogation, one talking point in particular deserving particular interest:

November 12, 2003 – Jean Chretien announced that Parliament was prorogued on the eve of the Liberal leadership convention (so Chretien and Martin didn’t have to sit together in the House of Commons and face a dispute over who was Prime Minister). Martin did not become Prime Minister until December 12, 2003 and Parliament did not resume until February 2, 2004 – almost four months later.

Which is to say that Chretien wasn't running away from parliament like Stephen Harper did twice.

RALLY Expose that isn't.

Conservative bloggers are slavering all over the CAPP Facebook Group and elsewhere screaming, see see we knew the rallies were partisan, and not non-partisan like the organizers said, see see, here's the evidence on this website that we Harpercons paid for !

The majority of Canadians took a partisan position against Stephen Harper three elections in a row precisely because we suspected and then knew that he is a liar and a hypocrite and is anything but a lover of democracy.

Who the hell else would on the streets in large numbers but those who voted Liberal, New Democrat, Green, except the large number of Conservative voters who were betrayed by Peter MacKay and who have also joined CAPP, except as well independents and small party voters who also feel betrayed by Harpercon inc ? Of course we planned the rallies.

Canadian voters are going to continue to rally and plan and cooperate in order to guarantee that Stephen Harper and his policies will not survive a fourth election.

Guelph's Jan 23rd rally was organized by CAPP, CUPE and the Council of Canadians,
on March 3, there will be more of us, from all over the spectrum but from the right that hardens around Harper like a shell of contempt.

Get well Jack

Eye of the tiger, thrill of the fight..

Fair Share Cabinet

My solution to the mess Canadian democracy is in, is one, which I believe would be most fair to the vast majority of voters, and that is all inclusive, proportionally representative cabinet. Cabinet is the government. The House would become the loyal opposition and get the watchdogs and GG, the PM would have to step aside if he or she can't keep the confidence of the House, and the party whips become effectively meaningless, restoring representation to local voters, and removing it from the parties. It's a much simpler form of proportional rep, it's more cost effective, and could actually become a custom of the House without any changes to the constitution: all it would take is a willing PM, and parties prepared to run the House on behalf of the largest possible majority of Canadian voters.

The Christian Cons' Complaint

Apparently, the only people allowed to vote in online polls like the ones employed by CTV to justify all things Harper are conservatives. If 223,000 Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament decide to vote they're being undemocratic (although about 20% of CAPP members seem to be conservatives from the Progressive side of the party betrayed by Peter MacKay.) Apparently, the Christian Con thinks that if we don't bend over for the shaft from self-professed social authoritarians, we're Harper haters. Some people never will understand that democracy is meant to respect the directions of the majority.
Maybe that's why lying, the inability to apologize for wrong doing, and ethical hypocrisy of all kinds are the hallmarks of the American-inspired holier-than-thou minority that now governs this nation.

My Jesus doesn't hate as much as Harper's does

The Armageddon Factor: The Rise of Christian Nationalism in Canada (Hardcover)
by Marci McDonald (Author)

An urgent wake-up call for all Canadians who think that this country is immune from the righteous brand of Christian nationalism that has bitterly divided and weakened the United States.

In her new book, Marci McDonald documents the startling extent of the influence that the religious right already wields in Canada and shows how, quietly, often stealthily, it has provoked far-reaching changes in Canadian policies and institutions, including our public service, our schools and our courts.

In four short years, galvanized by their failure to stop same-sex marriage, not only have conservative Christians developed a permanent infrastructure in Ottawa, designed to outlast whatever party is in power, but they have done so by borrowing the rowdy style of the American religious right to which most of their leaders boast close ties. Their rise has been tied to the election of Stephen Harper and it is no secret that evangelicals have already re-shaped Harper's foreign policy in the Middle East, guided by what McDonald terms the Armageddon Factor. But few Canadians are aware that a militant band of conservative Christians with a direct pipeline to Harper's cabinet is also attempting to reshape the country's social, cultural and even scientific policies, driven by a belief that Canada has a biblically ordained role to play in the final days before Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ.

Stephen Harper

Canadian voters are not yours to be whipped.

You've made it personal.

And now, we, the majority of Canadians who have voted against your coalition party and your lack of character three times in a row, will make you understand that not all the media in the nation can keep you from us. We are coming for you, and for your coalition partners, and we will vote you down so that you finally get our message: this is a democracy, not a corporate manageriate, nor a Tory kingdom: you do not have a divine right to rule us, and nor does your ideology of governance by a board of directors through the PMO as the office of a CEO, make us want to provide Harpercon inc with any more opportunities to sell off the Assets of this nation.

We will not be ruled by you much longer. When an election occurs, the result will be conclusive: you and your government will fall: the jackals of your own party will devour you and then one another.

Canadian voters began taking back their parliament today.
After years of listening to Mr. Harper lecture us about all the wonderful democratic reforms he was going to enact, we decided, that since he apparently can't bring himself to respect any of his own pledges, we would take over the process of making the changes ourselves.
And it's not that we just don't trust the Harpercons, it's that we don't trust party politics to get behind genuine change.
