How did the Toronto Sun turn the McGuinty Liberals into Lieberals ? Because the Provincial Liberals made a number of promises they couldn't keep after they won the election. Why couldn't they keep them ? Because Finance Minister Jim Flaherty lied to the legislature about the state of the province's books before the election. Turns out he had hidden 5.6 billion in debt from the provincial parliament. Did Flaherty wear the disgrace of that contempt ? No, because the right wing media turned the story into that of 'Lieberals.' Does anyone remember Flaherty's dishonesty ? Not many, does anyone remember Lieberals, most people.
Also according to Boss Ford. The other parties "are going to cost the taxpayers a fortune," Ford said. "It's just tax, tax, tax and spend, spend, spend."
Spend Spend Spend ?
Mr Harper who refuses to explain the costs of anything to parliament ? A right that is the foundation of parliamentary power: back from the days when the House of Commons demanded the right to know why the king wanted to spend money. King Harper refuses, and calls attempts to force him to reveal his costs intrusions in cabinet secrecy.
Then there's Mr Flaherty redux, a man who has been wrong about every financial statement he's made, even while Kevin Page has been right about every statement he's produced based on the same books.
Sorry Boss Ford, your little neo-corporatist faux populist thuggery doesn't fly where intelligent people live.

Now is the time for The Real Liberal 'Democratic Renewal' Package

‎If a full-bodied democratic renewal package was created, does it still exist; can it be leaked ? If so, it should be done. Then all Liberals who support that document should stand behind it, stake their campaigns on it. It requires a coup within the Liberal Party, democrats splitting with corporatists, siding with new democracy through liberal renewal in the name of greatest equal liberty.

Ignatieff should offer National Unity Cabinet government, via proportional representation, house as loyal opposition, house controls the watchdogs, first hundred days based on renewal package. Canada needs to get past this, electing the NDP as opposition reminds me of the military protectorate governing Egypt after they swept up their revolution and went home to wait for a democracy that the world desperately needs to see sweep the planet, starting in Canada.

Are you up for a coup Liberal democrats ? Put the renewal package on the electoral table, Canada wants to judge it for ourselves. The world needs it on the table. The consortium failed to follow the journalistic logic of so important a public statement and give it considerable column space, instead it buried the story as one day's announcement. Dion gave simple explanations of the tax because it's a simple tax, designed to be the only tax, with a built in shelf life and not something forever. The media made no real attempt to keep Harper from lying about it, and they joined in saying it was hard to understand, and vast amounts of column-inch were given over to stories belittling Dion. The Green Shift is not only better economics than cap and trade but is safer, because Wall Street can easily take over cap and trade , and will, unless the America democracy movement throws the bankster's into jail, convicted for the shakedown of the American Treasury in 2008. Another unreported story, buried in spin about meltdowns, gutless journalism when a clearer example of organized crime can't be found, "give us the money or we'll crash the world economy." but it's not the job of corporate media to delve, it's their job to perform a role in a protection racket.
We have very little democratic media on the continent, it's nearly all corporatist, and through Rupert Murdoch, it's the same around the globe. MSM is the publicity arm of the Dilbert manageriate who practice their conscienceless pursuit of profit at the expense of democracy. During the 2008 election, which Harper triggered because he knew he wouldn't survive a confidence election after Obama got elected, the corporatist media was on message and so Harper was not held to account for his conscienceless pursuit of power despite his own 4 year term law, a story the media dismissed. Dismissed as part of the protection racket in which their payment would be more wealth transfered to them through even larger propaganda payments once Harper was safely back in power before Obama won. The laundered spin cycle money receiving MSM was not engaged in journalism in defense of democracy during the election of 2008 , they failed to make the connections between the 140 economists supporting the Green Shift and the Canadian people. No, the corporatist media was on message: after getting away with the shakedown/meltdown lie, the ethical miasma that occurs during the conscienceless pursuit of profit took care of the rest of the spin cycle. Dion was Big Oil's enemy, TexAlberta Bush League politics and Big Media were against him the whole election.
On the Thanksgiving weekend before the Monday vote, as families got together, young people came home from university and defended the necessity of the Green Shift, and there was poll evidence of an electoral uptick towards Dion, he was an honest likable, brilliant guy who had no killed instincts, but we weren't electing a killer, that's why CTV released the footage of Dion struggling to answer that question that could only have come from the logical warrens of the Duffyverse whoever actually asked it of Dion, but it was the release of that footage of him trying to sort through the questions tenses, the endless showings of the threepeat of attempts to figure out the logically challenged question, destroyed the uptick for the next day vote, liberals stayed owned, other people felt let down by Dion and voted against him. Duffy and Pamela Wallin were rewarded for the release with senate seats.
So that's when MSM lost the trust of liberal democractic Canadians, which is why, in early 2009, Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament and its allies and offshoots swarmed your comment sections and your polls, it's why the yellow National Post allows now allows no comments, no challenge. CAPP changed politics in Canada, we forced the PM to come back and admit that the country had to "make up for lost time." The Canadian people forced that bumbled admission out of him,and the media did not even note that he had made the admission, when it was there in his own words, when he challenged the liberals to work through the March Break in order to "make up for lost time." The corporatist press had been paid to run a protection racket for the PM and that's what you did, and mostly do.
The PM Protection Racket, or Propaganda Man's Action Plan Media Scam, saw the PMO transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to the Consortium that controls debate in this country, the last 26 million of the protection money was paid out two weeks before the election, an ad buy that ostensibly promoted a program that was ending.
80% of Canadian media is owned by three conservative business families. 20 years ago 10% of Canadians owned 40% of the commonwealth, they now own 60%, while 50% of Canadians own only five per cent of the commonwealth. The corporatist media serves to protect those rackets, those ends, and not the goals of democracy. We have learned that as a people, enmasse, since 2008. The consortium is a cartel. The consortium is a protection racket. It will say, that I am proud of those Canadian journalists who are trying to break out the bubble in which they are forced to report. I may have to begin respecting more of you if you keep it up.

File Under Accountability is for Anyone But Conservatives

For when Don Cherry Comes Blustering About Your Riding

A CAPP friend named Emily Dee, wrote about this here.

From her archives, and speaking of tough guys, here is a one two combination for when Don Cherry shows up for right wings rants in your riding

1.

"When COLD-fX maker CV Technologies visited Parliament Hill with their spokesman, hockey commentator Don Cherry, it was “a mistake” for Harper to accept gifts, including a signed Mark Messier hockey jersey and a case of the cold remedy, MacDermid noted."

http://www.canada.com/topics/news/politics/story.html?id=e408929a-6e3a-4142-8a90-334fdc84fbd2

2.

Shan and Cherry later met directly with Harper in his Parliament Hill office. type='text'>Of photo ops, liberation, and business as usual.

According to a witness in Benghazi on CBC radio a few minutes ago, when Coalition air strikes began the city was being shelled, eliminating a ten mile stretch of Gadaffi military - troops and equipment, and thus, reports of hospitalized civilians were from the Libyan army shelling outside last night, when the city was being softened up before it waged street to street fighting and terro campaigns aided by fifth columnists who rose after the Colonels' call to arms came the day before, so the army is out of the picture, and the fifth columnists are now fighting for their lives, and thus, civil war is waging inside Benghazi between rebels and their allies of individuals (liberal democrats, petrolier, tribalists, communists, gangsters, terrorists, whoever is not part of the regime's 5th columnists) and who, each for their own reasons, are fighting Gadaffi's civilian allies.
And of course, OUR regime's poster boy PM is waiting for the photo op where he gets to pretend to believe in democracy, pretend he doesn't side with the interests he shares with the guy who will soon no longer be in charge of the big prisons in Libya. Harper is in Europe representing Canada's oil and military-industrial interests, this - international intervention - is being used to change the corporate manageriate of Libyan asset holders, not to enable democracy. Harper is acting as consigliere for the TexAlberta petroligarchy. He is there as their political last hope in North America, because if liberal democracy rises this spring in Canada, while all his own regime's corruption is coming to the fore - despite the fact that he spent over 400 million dollars in 5 years propping up bankrupting corporatist media outlets, especially after 2008 when an infusion of election propaganda kept them afloat until the budget of 2009 when actionplanadscam sped up the transfer of wealth to the three Conservative family chains who run 80% of Canadian media, and thus the Con continued when the transfer bought an endless spin cycle, when PMO money laundering throughout the country produced a stream of endless propaganda about Harper the Good, and about Conservative trustworthiness in managing what they never noted is essentiallya liberal economy they would have dismantled if Harper had been elected his first go around.
Harper needs jets he can use on protesters in Canada when climate change starts creating death, destruction and protest, the petroligarchy is known to be paying for climate denial, and they aren't doing it because they don't believe it isn't happening, they know it's coming and the less there are of us when it does, the happier they'll be, and there are 5th columnists who collaborate with them in their plans for our demise, and they do so because they hope their families and clans will be allowed to survive as servants.
This is the last stand of the protectorate folks, Harper knows his own electability is now on the wrong side of history and that all his broken promises about democracy, transparency and accountability via the subsequent actions of his self consolidating power base in the PMO and cabinet, have guaranteed that he will once again face an air strike of votes cast down on him for the third time in a row by Canadian liberal democrats voters who still form the majority of the electorate in Canada, and who now, because of Libya, grasp how well aimed an air strike must be against an enemy throughout the country and hunkered down in communications hubs. We must own the comments of anything put out by his propaganda allies in their corporate bunkers, we must speother liberal democratic voters who don't yet see through the lie will hear truth being speaking to power as well blow past all the talking point minions.
It has been the existence of the loose coalition of political-philosophical liberal democratic voters, and not coalitions of parties, who have preserved the spirit of that cause since the 1935 victory over the Bennett-Meighen Corporatist Government, (they too loved large prisons) and they - since before forming their government in 1930, had been aiding and abetting Hitler, Mussolini and Franco (and Duplessis in Quebec). That is what corporatists do around the world, they set up dictators to regulate populations for profit, which is what our PMO wants to do in Canada, why Mulroney "opened it for business."
We live in a Cromwellian Protectorate, in operation in one form or another since 1640, 5th Columnists, who back then were called Levelers, are people willing to betray the poor, who had been known as Diggers. Thus a Proetctorate is one in which the Servant class betrays the impoverished classes because their masters need to exploit somebody to make a profit. From a Levelers point of view, there are always two sides to an exploitation, and since both the Protectorate and the Diggers have weaknesses, Levelers exploit their masters, because the Protectors are a minority, usually a small minority, and thus, they need allies, which Levelers provide by not questioning the share of the commonwealth taken by the Protectors. Levelers then take the percent left to the rest of the population, so they exploit the weakness of the disenfranchised, by removing the poor even further from the mutual benefits of the Commonmwealth itself. Commonwealth, however, by definition, does not belong to any group of people. Humans have to organize crime families to rob the commonwealth over time and because wealth is power, they turning fellow commoners into servants, who then turn those who have less than nothing into beggars.
It's Mammon worship in a Babylon system of whore management, it wears a mask of Piety and speaks righteous reward to cover up multitudes of sins and crimes.
So these may or may not be the End Days, but Endgame Time is coming for the Protectorate because sins and injustice can no longer remain concealed, truth will set us free and reconciliation will preserve most of our generations when climate change hell and high water comes, we can create processes for the international and national stages that let justice and mercy save us, and once we do, all children will grow up in a process that no longer surpasses our understanding, and time will tell a different story of a more mature humanity and about the glorious planet on which we share in the regeneration of Commonwealth that is life itself.

Harper's Transfer of Wealth to Conservative media.

What liberal left wing media ? Build the whole campaign around Professor Ignatieff's analysis of Harper and let other liberals make the policy announcements: by the time we get to the televised debates, whether Iggy will be PM or not, we will have Harper where we - the liberal democratic coalition of voters - need him. Challenge Stephen to a debate on collegial leadership versus corporatist manageriate. Not the Bloc. Not the NDP. And certainly not the Liberals.

While Stephen Harper attacks the per vote subsidy and claims that he believes political parties should not rely upon taxpayer subsidies, his party has raked in millions upon millions more taxpayer dollar subsidies than any other party through the tax donation subsidy, the per vote subsidy, the party election costs reimbursements and the candidate election costs reimbursements

* About 80% of Conservative funds comes from the taxpayer subsidies, compared to about 69% for Liberals.

* The Conservatives cost taxpayers $8.11 per vote, Liberals $7.75 per vote.

* Tories took in $54.4 million in 2009, only $10.5 million of that was from actual donors (after tax credits)

* And here's the real killer: while only 36% of voting Canadians (and only 22% of eligible voters) supported the Conservatives in the last election, the CONSERVATIVE PARTY RECEIVED 44% OF ALL TAXPAYER SUBSIDIES. Total taxpayer subsidies was approximately $100 million. The Liberals received only 28% of all taxpayer subsidies, which is more in line with their 30% of the vote; the NDP got 20% of the subsidies; the Bloc got 8%.

Even if you don't like the per vote subsidy, you must agree that the Conservatives are eating at the trough a lot more than any other party, once again proving the saying that "Conservatives seem to think Conservative principles don't apply to them".

The tax donation subsidy is: far less democratic since it results in parties getting taxpayer subsidies with no connection to their democratic support; far costlier than the per vote subsidy; and more detrimental to society since the 75% tax credit provides an incentive to Canadians not to donate to charities.

[Note: data derived from Globe article - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/per-vote-subsidy-but-a-fraction-of-taxpayer-support-for-political-parties/article1880294/]

Corporatism on Parade

Thomas d'Aquino is President and Chief Executive of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.
He has been described by Peter C. Newman as "the most powerful influence on public policy formation in Canadian history", and listed by historian Jack Granatstein as one of the 100 most influential Canadians of the twentieth century. A prolific writer and speaker, he has worked as special assistant to the Prime Minister, special counsel on international trade law and international advisor on strategic business problems.
Thomas d'Aquino worked with Manley on the Task Force that created the document for Building a North American Community.

This guy has to be stopped!

Here is a welcome letter he wrote to Unite The Right

"According to an old American joke, the Soviet Union collapsed because they only had one communist party. They'd still be around if they'd been smart enough to have two communist parties that were exactly alike on every issue except abortion.

A similar model has worked for years in Canada. Since at least Mulroney, we've had a Conservative Party that has explicitly advocated the neoliberal policies that the Liberal Party has implemented. This arrangement, along with concentrated media ownership, has served us well. As one of the few commentators not on our payroll has pointed out, we "have been dictating fiscal, trade and economic policy to governments since the early 1980s."

The benefits? Over 100 billion in corporate tax cuts, radical decentralization, gutting of social programs and unemployment insurance, and a government that took up our cause on the international scene. It was an unprecedented success.

But it worked best with Liberals in power and Conservatives perpetually set to gain power.

The era of minority governments and sponsorship scandals threatens to slow down our agenda. Wanting to gain power, the Liberals and Conservatives are willing to bow to the electorate with policies that voters want, and even enter a coalition with the NDP. God forbid.

Most Canadians don't like Stephen Harper--journalists least of all--and most Canadians think Martin should be pushed aside. This leaves both parties vulnerable to the will of the electorate, and distracts them from implementing the agenda of the 150 richest corporations in Canada (which I happen to represent).

There is a solution to this unique 21st century problem. We modestly propose to unite the right... again.

While there are obvious cultural differences between the parties, the policy differences are remarkably cosmetic. Even so, the divisions within parties are greater than those between the Grits and Tories.

The benefits are undeniable. Corporate Canada will only have to fund one party, and the return on that investment--in tax cuts for corporations and the rich, subsidies and sweatheart privatization deals--will be incomparable.

Best of all, the Liberals will no longer have to give speeches about fixing health care for a generation or funding social programs. Every time I hear Paul Martin talk about signing Kyoto or a "rising tide not lifting all boats" and the importance of social programs, I cringe. How horrible it must be to have to talk about things that you clearly have no interest in.

No longer.

Welcome to the future of Canadian politics.

sincerely,

Tom d'Aquino
President & Chief Executive
Canadian Council of Chief Executives

This is a very frightening new reality

Monsanto Death Squads

Remember that news story

about the 352 billion in narcotics money that was laundered into the global banking system, and so stablized world financial markets at the start of the meltdown/shakedown ? along with the Empire Club, that there was nothing in fascism that was incompatible with Empire. Clearly Bennett wanted a state radio to buttress the claims of corporatism (the ideology of fascism. However, Bennett was defeated in 1935 by the Liberals and Labour, and thus turned the country away from fascism and tory democracy (letting the servants vote because they support the interests of their masters.) The CBC spent the war covering the horrors of the conflict between liberal democracies and the enemies who the conservative party had aided and abetted before the war. Since then, the CBC has been a voice defending liberal democracy. The neo-corporatists want to undo the result of the 1935 election and the second world war and to destroy liberal democracy forever, which was their agenda in thew 1920's and 30's.
Reminds of Jacques Parizeau being interviewed on CBC yesterday, talking about how when he first got involved in politics as a young man French Canadians, they were the poorest people in the country, what he didn't say, and what the CBC didn't note, was that was because Quebec was a fascist province until the Quiet Revolution in 1960, when Liberals and Labour finally overthrew the Union Nationale and Daniel Johnston Sr. (Brian Mulroney's mentor.)
As far as I am concerned, liberal democracy is what makes the CBC a public broadcaster rather than a state broadcaster. Israel is wrong: even Biblically they're wrong, or rather, this is not spiritual Israel, this is fallen Israel of which the Bible has plenty to say, mostly in the mouths of Jewish Prophets: in any event, if they were a spiritual nation, 50 years after the founding of their state they would have had a Jubilee, and returned the land to those who held it 50 years before. They did not. There is no righteousness in the councils of Israel, and Canada would be wise to acknowledge that fact.

More Harpercon Spin Machinery On its way

More Social Authoritarian infrastructure being moved into place before the Harpercon coup against parliamentary democracy in Canada. My guess is the only principle that you still are - that you ever were - standing on, is your visceral hatred of liberalism and your commitment to eradicate it. For the good of Canadian Conservatism, resign. In honour of those from that political tradition (including some of my own MacDonald-era Kingston Scot Tories,) resign. In the name of those from the party you used to subvert the nation, resign; for the sake of those who helped create our democracy, and in the cause of parliament over every party ever in power, resign.
For the good of Canadian Conservatism and the nation sir, you need to surrender your party and leave the stage. Let local conservatives reconsider their cause, let me them quickly pick a new leader, even as the stories of the ship of your state begin leaking out, Stephen let your party fight an election without you, even as a chorus of truth telling and whistle blowing and ratting out begins to sound. Let the new leader stumble to the polls, and in the aftermath of your ruinous rule Mr. Prime Minister, let them consider a less dictatorial form of conservative philosophy than neo-corporatism to present for our consideration next election.

Let voters of good will create a coalition of our own, one whose goal would be to elect representatives who serve individual ridings and not the interests of their party.

We are crown-chartered commoners, none greater or lesser than another. Party Politics just met its match in an awakened, online electorate capable of mobilizing on the ground around an ancient tradition of common rules that politicians keep making and breaking. The Speaker speaks for Our House, for the deal that was negotiated over centuries, the agreement we keep re-working as our institutions become more egalitarian. That is how I will be voting next time.

The Speaker comes Through

I thought Milliken was going to cave and that Harper's dictatorship was just around the corner, but apparently the majority still has a voice in this country. What is the political class, was is political class, as far as I am concerned, Ignatieff's Liberal Conservative family pedigree, intellectual accomplishment and willingness to listen to reason, show me who has political class and who has not, when it comes to him and Mr. Harper: the PM has no class, Harper is small minded and mean spirited: thus, Stephen is too small for Canada. And more fool Bruce Anderson, the columnist I linked too, for his poor grasp of Ignatieff's place in the Canadian ruling class, his actual place as a cautious liberal willing to think and then do big within a complex balance: in fact; a genuine liberal from the ruling class always finds a way to create greater equal liberty, while Harper serves only the oil money: Anderson's admitted inability to strategically comprehend why Ignatieff would talk about the political class, says more about the columnist than it does about Iggy. A political class should have class. Ignatieff has it, Guergis, Jaffer and Harper do not. The PM's record of discord proves he is a lesser man serving a lesser cause.

End of the Liberal Empire ?

My response to Andrew Coyne.
Liberals can't be the party of global corporatism and democracy: the two ideologies are mutually exclusive. Neo-liberalism is a conservative ideology, not a liberal one: there is no such thing as a good corporate citizen for the very simple reason that corporations are not citizens: nor can they sign affidavits in court because they have no conscience to bind them. And if corporatism is the only real game on the table, there is no need for a kinder gentler exploitative golem: what Iggy's grandfather George S. Grant would have called private government. No, liberalism either chooses democracy and small business/cooperative enterprise, or it chooses corporatism: selling us out to the world's privateer governments will not save the Liberal Party: either the party stands for the greatest equal liberty within the context of the greatest equal good, what Grant might have called a more contemporary version of Sir. John A's old fashioned Liberal-Conservative coalition that created Canada, cooperative commonwealth, or it betrays the underclasses of the world by unifying middle class levelers and the ruling class protectorate to create what King and Labour prevented RB Bennett from establishing in 1935, fascism: international imperial corporate capitalism, the most anti-democratic force on the planet.

Lament for a Nation

This book, by George P. of the American right, but, apparently the Christian fundamentalist whackjobs in the republican p[arty prefer oppressing the poor, removing the last vestiges of dignity from the sick, and turning every opportunity into a money grubbing whorefest in Babylon USA. So much for the Sermon on the Mount. And here in Canada, our religio-political right is just as fascistic. Fortunately the vast majority of Canadians aren't fundamentalists, thank God, and I mean that deeply and sincerely. Journalists who narrrowcast the
corporatist message are less interesting, however good a writer any given one of them may be, or however hard he or she are trying to be good journalists. The
pretense of objectivity is also not in their favour, no individual can
be objective, everything is subjective, and in the case of corporate
media, subject constrained: at best a journalist can be fair, at best a
blogger can be fair, some journalists speak truth to power, most don’t,
that most is why most of us aren’t interested in I would hope people calm down and learn to focus less on the messenger, than the message at hand, which concerns the government’s compliance with the law of armed conflict insofar as the Afghan detainees, and compliance with Canada’s constitution insofar as Parliamentary documents.
Amir

http://bigcitylib.blogspot.com/2010/03/torture-whistle-blowers-research-was.html

An email reply from Amir Attaran

Hi Jerry,
There’s no secret. I held research and teaching positions at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Govt earlier this decade, where the thrust of my work was global health policy. Part of the time I was based in the Centre for International Development, where the director was Jeff Sachs. Later I was in the Carr Centre for Human Rights Policy, where the director was Michael Ignatieff. From Harvard, I went for briefer stints teaching at Yale, and researching at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (also called Chatham House) in London.

During the above period, I was being attacked by the anti-globalization left wing on specious accusations that my salary at Harvard was covertly financed by big pharma. Michael was of help in dispelling those false allegations. So it is both comical and ironic now to be attacked from the Tory right, with the nonsense that I am a “puppet” (your word) for Ignatieff.

The better explanation is that, having drawn bullets from both the left and the right at various times, I am independent-minded and believe in the facts as my research leads me to them. Currently, the facts are that officials in Canada’s government have knowingly partnered our country with torturers in Afghanistan. Others may grumble about it, but the evidence is overwhelming.
Amir
Con Prorogue Talking point from 2007: re Chretien

In 2007 the Conservative Party of Canada to justify the government's decision to prorogue circulated other past examples of prorogation, one talking point in particular deserving particular interest:

November 12, 2003 – Jean Chretien announced that Parliament was prorogued on the eve of the Liberal leadership convention (so Chretien and Martin didn’t have to sit together in the House of Commons and face a dispute over who was Prime Minister). Martin did not become Prime Minister until December 12, 2003 and Parliament did not resume until February 2, 2004 – almost four months later.

Which is to say that Chretien Of course we planned the rallies.

Canadian voters are going to continue to rally and plan and cooperate in order to guarantee that Stephen Harper and his policies will not survive a fourth election.

Guelph's Jan 23rd rally was organized by CAPP, CUPE and the Council of Canadians,
on March 3, there will be more of us, from all over the spectrum but from the right that hardens around Harper like a shell of contempt.

Get well Jack

Eye of the tiger, thrill of the fight..

Fair Share Cabinet

My solution to the mess Canadian democracy is in, is one, which I believe would be most fair to the vast majority of voters, and that is all inclusive, proportionally representative cabinet. Cabinet is the government. The House would become the loyal opposition and get the watchdogs and GG, the PM would have to step aside if he or she can't keep the confidence of the House, and the party whips become effectively meaningless, restoring representation to local voters, and removing it from the parties. It's a much simpler form of proportional rep, it's more cost effective, and could actually become a custom of the House without any changes to the constitution: all it would take is a willing PM, and parties prepared to run the House on behalf of the largest possible majority of Canadian voters.

The Christian Cons' Complaint

Apparently, the only people allowed to vote in online polls like the ones employed by CTV to justify all things Harper are conservatives. If 223,000 Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament decide to vote they're being undemocratic (although about 20% of CAPP members seem to be conservatives from the Progressive side of the party betrayed by Peter MacKay.) Apparently, the Christian Con thinks that if we don't bend over for the shaft from self-professed social authoritarians, we're Harper haters. Some people never will understand that democracy is meant to respect the directions of the majority.
Maybe that's why lying, the inability to apologize for wrong doing, and ethical hypocrisy of all kinds are the hallmarks of the American-inspired holier-than-thou minority that now governs this nation.

My Jesus doesn't hate as much as Harper's does

The Armageddon Factor: The Rise of Christian Nationalism in Canada (Hardcover)
by Marci McDonald (Author)

An urgent wake-up call for all Canadians who think that this country is immune from the righteous brand of Christian nationalism that has bitterly divided and weakened the United States.

In her new book, Marci McDonald documents the startling extent of the influence that the religious right already wields in Canada and shows how, quietly, often stealthily, it has provoked far-reaching changes in Canadian policies and institutions, including our public service, our schools and our courts.

In four short years, galvanized by their failure to stop same-sex marriage, not only have conservative Christians developed a permanent infrastructure in Ottawa, designed to outlast whatever party is in power, but they have done so by borrowing the rowdy style of the American religious right to which most of their leaders boast close ties. Their rise has been tied to the election of Stephen Harper and it is no secret that evangelicals have already re-shaped Harper's foreign policy in the Middle East, guided by what McDonald terms the Armageddon Factor. But few Canadians are aware that a militant band of conservative Christians with a direct pipeline to Harper's cabinet is also attempting to reshape the country's social, cultural and even scientific policies, driven by a belief that Canada has a biblically ordained role to play in the final days before Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ.
<img Clearly the Reform movement really was just a front for Alberta's oil industry, and clearly the Harrisite Reactionaries who form the core of the coalition party is now the Great Con, never were democrats. But somewhere along the way, probably listening to Preston Manning talking to Peter Gzowski on Morningside, I got the impression that the reformers actually wanted a more vigourous democracy. One thing is clear, if it hadn't been for Gzowski, Manning would never have reached a national audience, so any right wingers who are happy with their lot in life these days, should thank the CBC, because they gave you this chance to prove how much contempt for democracy you people really had all along.

Hiding behind soliders wasn't working

so Harper has gone to hide beyond the Olympics. Step and Fetch Obama, the premier politician representing the interest of the American petroligarchy, met with Premier of China and co, and waved some money figures around that will only sort of help before things start going really wrong on the planet. And yet I feel more hope now than if a deal had been struck. Somewhere in the series of blogs and commentaries I've traveled around in the last few months I came to realize that I shared something common with people I regard as extreme right, namely the view that an international cap and trade economy would be bad news indeed. To them, it's bad news because they think it's a socialist plot of the green movement. I think they're wrong in every part of their analysis except their instinct that there is something dangerous in a globally institutionalized cap and trade system. To them it's an attempt by the left to create a global state, while to me it's corporate socialism, because that's the end game of corporatism: like Roman imperialism: corporatists want to manage humanity as a resource, like the planet, their goal is to be free to use people as commodities, exploitable, expendable, tradeable.
The carbon tax on the other hand is just a consumption tax, it doesn't require an international carbon-credit trade manageriate to administer it, a straight carbon tax won't lead to global racketeering.
The UN just announced that 380 billion dollars worth of narcotics profit was money-laundered through international financial markets over the last year. My guess is Bersculoni's encouragement to Italian nationals around the world led the mobs to use the one time no-questions-asked transferring of accounts from foreign banks to Italian ones in 2009.
Gangster capitalism bought a good chunk of the world's assets at recession fire-sale prices: their merger with global corporatism is now complete, or would be, if China wasn't standing in their way.

Copenhagen

A year ago Canada had a chance to side with the angels, but the corporate media ensured that never happened, by refusing to delve deeply into the various and countless hypocrisies of Stephen Harper, we are left with our ineffectual and much hated PM slumping around Denmark wasting more tax payer dollars, about the only thing Harper excels at besides secrecy and lies. Cap and Trade is a scam, because the people who will benefit the most are the investment bankers/racketeers, who just engaged in a series of shakedowns of the global economy, it's almost a good thing no real deal was reached in Copenhagen.
It's been a funny ride, finding myself agreeing with climate change deniers about what a global cap and trade system really is, but then, my central thesis is that the Cold War was essentially a merger between gangster capitalists and global corporatists. The UN made an announcement on Dec 13 that 350 billion dollars worth of organized crime narcotics profits were so successfully money-laundered in the last year that the funds actually helped stabilize the global meltdown. To me, there was no meltdown. it was shakedown, and most of the 'honest' people were shaken out of the money tree. A cap and trade deal would have created a new racket of global proportions: a corporatist coup was prevented, a massive international manageriate was avoided.
Dion's Green Shift Carbon tax was supported by 140 of Canada's top economists during the last election for a reason: it was simpler, more direct and more effective, Ignatieff was one of the first Libs to promote the idea, but now he too backs cap and trade. The Green Party of course maintains the Carbon Tax in its policy.
The failure in Copenhagen was multi-faceted. Harper's failure to be of any use looks good on him, but bad on Canada: the idea that a green economy can't outstrip the value of the petroligarch's century old governing model was a tedious tune but one he kept playing. What the mayors of Canadian cities and the Premiers of Quebec and Ontario proved was that the federal government isn't necessary for Canadians to take genuine action, although that too is a reality that unfortunately plays into Mr. Harper's main agenda, bankrupting the national government, so that when it comes time to pay down the national debt he created, he can have a fire sale of Canadian assets, there will be lots of good deals for the privateering friends of the Con coalition, because they want corporate socialism. At the same time, the failure of Copenhagen means untold misery, of a scale that doesn't require belief in climate change for large groups of people to discover what's going to happen: the senior citizens who supported Harper in the last election have helped condemn their own grandchildren to a very dark future. Let them die in the knowledge of what they did, or in ignorance, either way, the shit will hit the fan whether they believe in fans or shit.
There was talk that the Chinese only sent their premier, while the Americans sent their president, but Obama isn't much more than a premier himself, the president of Goldman Sachs stayed home too, the American congress has been bought and sold by big business, the Yes We Can campaign was a lie, Obama is just an extension of the Bush League, a step and fetch boy for the military industrial complex that so worried Eisenhauer. The winter of our discontent is upon us.
And yet, I see a glimmer of hope, it doesn't lie in politics, except the politics of the personal, we don't need big business, we don't need big government, we need one another, we need communities of action, we need a revolution based on a revelation about the inter-relatedness of personal and common good. Insurance companies began their existences as Mutual Benefit Societies. That is the essence of Green ideology: we are symbiotic lifeforms living on a symbiotic planet, Social Darwinism is a lie and we must now move beyond it.

Tories: everything on the public's dime

Never before has a governing party spent more of the tax payers dime for their own benefits than have the Harpercons, this time it's chaffeurs and paid overtime. I've been a diplomatic chauffeur (consul general of Pakistan back in 1984 or so) and I know there's a lot of sitting around, and extended hours, but the Harpercons, have - as in all things, taken their own sense of privilege to new heights. No taxi cabs across a few streets for these spend-alls, in fact, they really are fiscal conservatives at all: they are more like Lords of the Land, disdaining accountability and thrift.
